Horse riding

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore the Island's countryside is on horseback. With it's many bridle paths and quiet lanes, the Isle of Wight is perfect for both pony trekking and horseriding.

Upton Riding Stables, one of the only British Horse Society approved riding establishments on the Isle of Wight, offer either 30 minute or full hour scenic country rides on horseback from their stables in Binstead near Ryde. All standards of riding ability are catered for and BIS riding hats are provided.

A half hour ride costs £13 per person, and a full hour £21 per person. A declaration and brief medical form will need to be completed and handed in on arrival. Unfortunately Upton Riding Stables cannot take under 4 year olds on lessons and under 8 year olds on hacks or country rides. Call them on 01983 566801 for more information.

Mountalifan Riding School, based in Newport, offer riding lessons which are very enjoyable as well as educational. Sandy Hunt, who is the owner of the riding school, is a fully qualified riding instructor who has been teaching for many years. Hacks out are also led by Sandy and the hacking area around the riding school is very beautiful. You may wish to go out across the downs for a quiet and relaxing two hour ride. Shorter one hour rides are also available.
