Needles Old Battery

Opening times: 13 March to 31 October 2010, daily ![]() Entrance © National Trust Under threat from the French, this 1860 Palmerstonian fort was built to protect the South Coast of England from invasion. The fort is located high above the sea with views across the famous Needles stacks and lighthouse. There is an exhibition and a 200ft tunnel leading to dramatic searchlight positions with fine views of the Hampshire and Dorset coastline. The tea room, serving 1940s style food, provides excellent views of the Needles and lighthouse. On the headland above the battery there is a rocket testing site which was in operation during the 1950s & 60s and some excellent walks over the adjoining Tennyson Down. Open Good Friday. Property closes in bad weather, please telephone on day of visit to check. There is no vehicular access to the Battery (visitors with disabilities by arrangement). Parking available 1 mile away at Alum Bay (minimum charge £3). |
