Carisbrooke CastleCastle Hill, Newport. PO30 1XY. (view map)
Opening times: All year, daily Steeped in history, this fantastic castle, set in 22 acres of grounds, has been described as the finest Norman building in Britain. Its oldest parts date back to the 12th century although much of what is now visible was built in the 16th century. Look out for the donkey-driven wheel, massive gatehouse and great views from the ramparts. New for 2010 is the Princess Beatrice Garden. With pretty period planting, a fountain and plunge pool, clipped hedges and an orchard of fruit trees, this Edwardian-style garden promises to delight. The garden provides a perfect contrast to the storybook castle of Carisbrooke with its ramparts and keep to climb. It was once the private garden of Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Beatrice, and celebrates the time when the Princess lived at the castle in her role as Governor of the Isle of Wight. Every Tuesday and Wednesday during August, there is a Grand Medieval Joust at 11am. Travel back to a time of romance, chivalry and knights in shining armour. Be entertained by musicians, royal falconry and have-a-go activities, including children’s junior jousting. Support your favourite knights as they break lances upon each other in a genuine competition of skill and bravery. |
