Tennyson Down and High Down
Half a mile west of Freshwater Bay (view map)
Opening times: All year Outstanding white chalk cliffs reaching their highest point at the summit of Tennyson Down, which is marked by the Tennyson Memorial cross 482ft above sea level. The chalk ridge continues westwards over High Down to the Needles Headland. Most of the area is covered in springy turf which is rich in downland flowers and wildlife. There are spectacular views of the south west coastline and from the Yar Valley to Yarmouth. There are excellent walks on top of the Down or along the bottom of the chalk face, including the final stages of the famous Tennyson Trail from Newport to Freshwater Bay. Parking available at the top of Highdown Lane and at Freshwater Bay. |
