Island names Best of British

Article produced 20/01/05. The Isle of Wight has been named as of the UK’s top 10 Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Period Living & Traditional Homes magazine’s Best of British Awards 2004-5.

Over 200,000 readers of the magazine were asked to nominate the aspects of traditional British life they love best from best stately home to favourite reclamation yard. The Island was voted runner-up in the Best Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty category, with the The Lake District in Cumbria being named as overall winner.

John Brownscombe, the Isle of Wight AONB Officer, said, “This is a wonderful national recognition of the fantastic natural beauty of our Island. As Islanders, we have great pride and attachment to this special place and enjoy sharing this with visitors who cross the water to our shores. On the Island, you can experience many of the quintessential characteristics of lowland England in one small area. From majestic chalk cliffs to secluded estuaries and creeks; open windswept downland to quiet ancient woodland; the dramatic ‘Undercliff’ to gentle rolling farmland; our tranquil corner of England has great appeal to local people and visitors alike.”

In addition, Osborne House was named runner up in the Best Stately Home category and Morton Manor was runner up in the Best Period Garden category.

The Best of British awards are featured in the February edition of Period Living & Traditional Homes magazine.
